CHLOÉ BAKALAR
Senior Research Associate

Dr. Chloé Bakalar is an ethicist embedded within the technical teams of OpenAI. Previously, she was the chief ethicist at Meta. She joined Meta (then-Facebook) in 2019, where she spearheaded and developed the company’s approach to applied AI and Generative AI Ethics. She continued to work across the company to lead and advance AI Ethics at Meta, which involved both (1) identifying and building understanding of the ethical considerations around Meta’s AI-powered platforms, products and systems; and also (2) designing and operationalizing ethics tooling to enable responsible decision-making and ethics-forward product work.

From 2018 to 2024, Bakalar was a professor on the faculty of Temple University, teaching ethics, political philosophy and public law. Her academic research has focused on the intersection of information technology, ethics and democratic citizenship. Previously, she held a Values and Public Policy Postdoctoral Associate position with appointments at Princeton’s University Center for Human Values (UCHV), Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) and the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics (CSDP). During this fellowship, she co-founded the Princeton Dialogues on AI and Ethics, an interdisciplinary academic program aimed at empowering AI design and deployment to produce greater positive impacts on people and society while reducing potential risks. She now serves on the Advisory Board for CITP. Bakalar received her PhD in 2014 and BA in 2007.
